‘May your shimmer linger un-diffused’. A stand out line from Charlotte Champian’s new single that seems to encapsulate the feeling to this track in five simple words. It’s an easy-breezy tune that radiates joy.
A blissful blend of jazz, pop, and soul, this song effortlessly brightens the mood when you press play. With a backing of shuffling drums, brass, keys, and an excellent display of harmonies from Charlotte, I think ‘Shimmer’ could intrigue anyone’s listening ears.
Explaining the meaning behind the song, Charlotte said ‘I wrote ‘Shimmer‘ in the lockdown of early 2020 as we faced so much turmoil and I felt powerless and isolated. I think sometimes all we can do is listen to and walk with loved ones through thick and thin and I wrote this to my husband as we tried to find the ‘shimmer’ in hard places’.
Maybe one of the few good things to come from this godawful pandemic is all the new music people, Charlotte included, have been inspired to write.
The most impressive piece of the puzzle to this track is how Charlotte utilises her vocal range. She doesn’t hold back in making sure she takes advantage of her talent, and it appears to have paid off. The different vocal lines are intricately woven to a point where it seems so simple, but I know for a fact it isn’t.
Assuming Charlotte was trying to produce a peaceful and positive song, you can’t really knock her because that is exactly what she has done. You could argue that the song could do with an extra catchy hook to stick in your brain. However, that would be some extreme nit-picking. Overall, this tune is a great release from Charlotte and would make it into a chilled, sunny afternoon playlist without a second glance.
I hope we hear more from her in the future, and I will certainly be keeping an eye out for anything new.
