Film Review : Sorry To Bother You.

Sorry To Bother You is one of the most fascinating movies of 2018. It’s funny and has an interesting plot, something that I haven’t seen done before. Finding a plot that’s unique and different is hard to come by nowadays. I have nothing but respect for Boots Riley for trying something new and being able to pull it off. Considering this is his feature film debut, he has a good career ahead of him if all of his movies are of this quality.

At the beginning of the movie, you won’t be expecting the weirdness to come. Something that does stick throughout the whole movie is the comedy. Sorry To Bother You is one of the funniest movies of the year, from its weird take on present-day America to its perfect use of satire. there’s so much to unpack that its perfect for a second viewing. On the surface, it’s about a man having to come to terms with his own actions and everything around him.

You’ll never quite know when Riley is going to take you. He wants to take you on an entertaining journey and if you’re able to sit back and relax then you’ll soon fall in love with the plot. Lakeith Stansfield gives his best performance to date as Cassius Green. I love him in Atlanta and felt his portrayal of L in Death Note was one of the few good parts of that movie. Most of us do our everyday lives and not thinking twice, Cassius wants to do something about that and make a name for himself.

Tessa Thompson, Steven Yeun and Jermain Fowler all give great supporting roles. All having their time to shine with script somehow managing to find time to give all of its characters a comedic moment. This is always hard for a comedy to pull off, with only Blockers being able to duplicate this.

There’s a certain aspect of the movie that might lose some people. To be honest, I was uncertain about how I felt when I saw it but as it progressed I slowly started to understand that its just part of this insane world that I’ve gotten myself involved in. I respect the director for never pulling back and instead choosing to push forward with the insane weirdness. I must mention the amazing soundtrack, every piece of music is perfectly composed and selected to match the tone of the movie.

Overall, I feel as though Sorry To Bother You will fly under a lot of peoples radar. Most likely the whole weird nature of the movie will put people off. Lakeith Stansfield gives the performance of his career, with a great supporting cast. The music is brilliantly composed and Riley has proven himself to be a director to be reckoned with.
