There’s so many films to choose from when you flick through the selections on Netflix. So much so that it can be easy to miss new additions to the catalogue. With that in mind, here is a round-up of what’s new to the streaming service.
(Other streaming services are available)
Lord of the Rings trilogy – yes, that’r right. One of the greatest ever movie franchises have all dropped on Netflix. The epic fantasy trilogy is made up of three outstanding films of huge scale, incredible set pieces and a huge heart. It’s amazing how well they hold up today considering the progression of special effects in the 15 years since The Return of the King. If you’ve got a spare nine-odd hours then there are few better ways of spending it.
Children of Men – director Alfonso Cuarón followed Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Askaban (the best Potter film) with this heart-wrenching dystopian sci-fi. Having since gone on to win two Oscars for Gravity and ahead of his latest piece, Roma, later this year, it is definitely worth checking out an important step in the evolution of this masterful filmmaker.
Selma – this 2014 biopic saw David Oyelowo star as Dr Martin Luther King Jr. It’s an impressive performance which should have garnered him more success in awards season. Nevertheless, Selma is a powerful portrayal of King’s campaign to secure voting rights by marching from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama back in 1965.
Allied – the mouthwatering duo of Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard star in this spy thriller about a Canadian intelligence officer and a French resistance fighter during World War 2.
The Light Between Oceans – another impressive leading cast, this adaptation of the 2012 novel sees Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander star in a slow-burn romance.
House of Cards S6 – if TV is more your jam then look no further than the sixth and final season of House of Cards. The first five are excellent, but the show’s future was thrown into uncertainty when the allegations came out against its leading man, Kevin Spacey, last year. Fortunately Robin Wright, who plays his wife, steps up to the plate to lead the show for its final season. Hopefully it won’t be overshadowed by Spacey and his omission from the series.
