Smooth, mysterious and inviting like a stranger in the night. Claire-Jayne’s first single from her upcoming EP displays the ways in which artists can operate these days. With a small amount of production accompanying her wonderful vocal talent, Claire-Jayne sets an excellent standard with her first single.
Although simple in its execution, with music that sounds like a jazzy ambiance right the way through the track, Phasing sets a great atmosphere. With a backing track that crescendos and overlays vocals, especially during the closing chorus, the music itself is smooth as silk.
Put that with the slightly raspy and far off vocals that meld beautifully with various notes throughout and you find yourself being drawn in. Although, there are times when I felt that the vocals were being lost in the noise, especially in the final chorus. I’m not sure whether it’s the sound they were going for, but the music, leading vocals and overlaid vocals all melded into a puddle at one point.
Not to take away from the production of the music, it’s excellent and couples nicely with Claire-Jayne’s vocals. Nor do I want to take away from the vocal talents of Claire-Jayne, her delivery is moody in the best way possible and really compliments the smooth blues and jazz style. My one issue is with the lyrics, they seem a little by the numbers and failed to send a message.
A great track that sets the mood in style, the lyrics are the weakest link in a strong chain.
