Review : Hey Gigantic – Colours

London outfit ‘Hey Gigantic’ continue to build momentum for themselves as they add to a growing string of promising singles with Colours. The group have been slowly bringing out singles for the last two years but with Colours having already received play on Amazing Radio and BBC Introducing, the track could mark the start of something big for Hey Gigantic.

In reference to the song, Vocalist/bassist, Jonathan Bateman comments that Its a song weve had for a couple of years and reworked multiple times before we got it to the finished version you hear nowand this process shows through the various different influences and styles on display. Specifically, whilst Hey Gigantics general sound leans more an alt-rock aesthetic, the track offers glimpses of a lighter sound.

It reminds a lot of Twin Atlantic or Circa Waves although I dont wish to directly compare Hey Gigantic to the pair as I feel it ultimately does them a disservice. The groups sound is well complimented by Batemans vocal work which makes its presence felt within a heavier sound without outstaying its welcome.

Overall, Colours is a solid track but Id argue that Hey Gigantic still have a long way to go before they reach their zenith. I think the big challenge for them now is coming out with something that can firmly put them on the map. However, this is not to say that the group are not good in their current state. One to watch out for in the coming months.
