Retro Futurists, Reclaim Vienna, are easing back into the post lockdown future with their latest new single ‘Joker’, an energetic and upbeat pop/indie crossover. The track offers such a funky bassline, with jazzy synths to top it all off. Lyrically the tune is equally as catchy as some of their earlier work, with the chorus giving a summer festival-style vibe, which is essential for the next few months.
The Cheshire-based, electronic indie synth, six-piece have a unique sound, classic indie with added 70s synth-style, very Abba Esque. You can very much hear the influences from bands like Blossoms, Duran Duran, Chic. The song could easily be construed as a love song but the ‘she’ in the lyrics actually personifies any idea or thought that plays on your mind and cannot be shifted.
With the band’s previous tunes gaining a lot of popularity with upwards of 17k streams on an earlier release, and a headline gig coming up in August, I expect to see them grow a lot over the next year.
Hard-hitting, alt-rock power trio, SINKA, who have been making waves in the London gig circuit, have released the second single ‘Skies’ from their upcoming EP ‘Take Me To The Skies’.
The track is exciting and different with soaring vocals and pounding riffs, it constantly builds throughout and doesn’t lose its magic. The falsetto notes just add an intimate touch to the song and it is somehow stunningly complimented when met by the powerful guitar riffs and drums. With hints of Nothing But Thieves but and Royal Blood, whilst maintaining their own style, it is thrilling to watch the guys explosively enter the music industry.
With similar themes to that of their previous music, the song talks of love, with lyrics such as: “I know I never tell you, but I love it when you come my way” It certainly helps to establish the regretful tonality of the EP which of course is reflected in the constantly varying pace of the song – going from slow and quiet to fast and chaotic, along with the emotional expression within vocals.
Overall, I really rate this tune, it is one that you cannot seem to get out of your head. I am eager to hear what they have in store for us.
A brand new and shiny post-punk band from Manchester, NARA, has just released this epic new single ‘Fashion’. I was captivated from start to end, the heavy guitar riffs, catchy lyrics, groovy bassline, it is just what you want to listen to on a hot day, on repeat!
NARA’s music seems to be defined by the technical ability of all the members and a willingness to wander off in different stylistic directions just to see what happens and it works, it works very well. The bass-driven song takes the listener through the journey of life, and how thoughts, feelings, and people change so quickly. Coming in at 4 minutes 16 seconds long, the song plays like a journey through different moods. As it meanders through synth and heavy punk guitar, the tune periodically returns to the distinctive heavy beat that binds it together throughout.
With the band having gigs at Night And Day Cafe, Band On The Wall, and a headline show at Zombie Shack, it seems as though 2021 is set to be an exciting breakout year.
The Sheffield-based, alt-rock duo, Perfectparachutepicture have returned with their first release of the year, new single ‘The Stream’ and its accompanying music video. The track flaunts runting guitars and howling vocals, it is an audacious arrival into 2021 for the duo. ‘The Stream’ is what you expect to hear live, with crazy audiences fuelled on sun and beer, I can only imagine throwing myself around to this song, given the chance. This song has been neatly written it shows like a rock rocks song but has a great rhythm behind it. It is ridiculously catchy and after a few listens you’ll find yourself subconsciously singing along.
“It’s a sad song in a way because the lyrics hint at where things can go if people let themselves be guided by other people’s direction, but at heart, it’s an Alt-Rock song with an anthemic chorus that encourages us to do what we want with our own lives. This is something that we feel really strongly about and it reflects in our music.”
With some of the duo’s early work gaining popularity in different places across the world, 18k streams on ‘They Only Want’, it looks like perfectparachutepicture have some good years ahead of them.
Newcastle-based, soul singer, Beth Macari is due to release her first single of 2021 on April 13th. “Gotta Get Back” is a deep dive into 90’s Soul and R&B. Beth’s voice is ever so eloquent, and is shown off completely around a simple groove to frame her soul-soaked voice.
With flawless harmonies and just enough variation in the arrangement to keep the ears pricked throughout, the whole piece is expertly executed and will have you singing and dancing along in no time.
Despite the limitations of the COVID-19 pandemic, spending the past year in lockdown hasn’t seen things slow down for Beth Macari, everything about this track, including the accompanying video was done on her iPhone. Beth also managed to perform twice at the UK’s first socially distanced venue, the Virgin Money Unity Arena, supporting Fleetwood Mac tribute “Rumours” and Les Misérables star Alfie Boe.
2021 will definitely be a great year for Macari, with dates already re-scheduled including support slots with Alexandra Burke on her UK tour. She will be one to look out for at future events.
